‘Hurt Locker’ Vs. ‘Avatar’: You Call THAT a Smear Campaign?

Did you hear about the brouhaha over a Hurt Locker producer dissing Avatar? Oh, it’s quite a fracas, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is taking it very seriously. Seems Nicolas Chartier sent an e-mail to friends and colleagues in the Academy on Feb. 19, basically pleading with them to vote for Hurt Locker for Best Picture. But he also made a reference to Avatar, violating Academy rules against “casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film.” Consequently, Chartier has been banned from attending the Oscars on Sunday. If Hurt Locker wins, the other three producers will take the stage to accept the award, while Chartier will have to pick up his trophy later, in shame.

Could Hollywood Exist with More Honesty?

When it comes to honesty in Hollywood, I always think about the marketing machine and the stars who slap on that sparkling, smiling face to give their movie good PR. Every director seems to be the most original, kindest, or visionary; every co-star is the best to work with; every film is just a sheer pleasure … no matter how crappy it is. Once in a while, we get an unadulterated opinion, like Matthew Goode’s negative opinion of Leap Year as a breathe of honest fresh air. But in light of some new Hollywood drama, I wonder how Tinseltown would function if the pomp and circumstance was stripped away and honest truth remained.

Future prophet?

In 2010’s “The Book of Eli,” Denzel Washington’s latest film, he plays a solitary man walking across the wasteland that was once America — and protecting a vital book that could save the world. The actor has had a varied and rewarding career over his 25-plus years in show business.

With those four words, “General” Larry Platt has gone from “American Idol” reject to Internet sensation.

The 63-year-old civil rights veteran performed his original hit at an audition for the show’s ninth season, winning over judges Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi — and earning a nervous endorsement from incurable skeptic Simon Cowell.

Stuart Townsend Ditches ‘Thor’ Over “Creative Differences”

Having just moved up the release date of Thor two weeks to open the summer movie season of 2011, Paramount Pictures has just lost their Fandral. The Associated Press is reporting that Stuart Townsend has left the production of Kenneth Branagh’s Marvel adaptation, a day before shooting, over – wait for it – “creative differences.” The ally of the Norse god (being played by Chris Hemsworth) will now be portrayed by Joshua Dallas, who will also be seen in the upcoming The Descent 2 and George Lucas’ Tuskegee Airmen film, Red Tails, alongside Terrence Howard who dropped out of Iron Man 2. Oh, the circle of Hollywood life.

Discuss: Will You See Polanski’s New Film?

Filed under:

Summit Entertainment has announced that Roman Polanski’s latest film, The Ghost Writer, will open in limited release in the U.S. on February 19, expanding to more cities throughout March. Where will Polanski be when his film opens in this country? He’s currently in Switzerland, waiting for the justice ministry to decide whether to extradite him to the U.S., where he would be sentenced on charges of unlawful sex with a minor, to which he pled guilty in the late 1970s (he’s since asked to be sentenced in absentia).

‘Thor’ Gets a New Release Date

There’s something rather fun about watching the studios scramble for summer release dates. It’s such a relatively new game, as we all seemed to realize when we did our summer retrospective series. But now, every weekend is a hot commodity and the 2011 card game has already started. With Spider-Man 4 delayed, and likely unable to make its May 6, 2011 release date, Variety reports that Thor has moved up and taken it. The hammer-wielding god was originally set to make his debut on May 20, 2011.

‘Spider-Man 4′ Still on Hold, Won’t Make May 2011 Release?

Shortly before the holidays, IESB reported that production on Spider-Man 4 had grounded to a halt due to problems with the story. Essentially, Sam Raimi wants Vulture to be the main baddie in the sequel, but Sony wants any villain but Vulture. Not long after that news broke — along with word that the title being used in-house was Spider-M4NMTV spoke with Sony who blasted the rumor and claimed production offices were closed because of the holidays.

Stay in the Closet, Sherlock Holmes!

If you enjoyed the unabashed bromance of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, and pondered whether Irene Adler and Mary Morstan were there just to make them seem less gay, keep those naughty thoughts to yourself, especially if you want to see a sequel. Because if Holmes gets any more homoerotic, then Holmes’ copyright holder will prevent another film from ever being made.

It all started with Robert Downey Jr.’s quips to David Letterman. EW had the transcript, which I’ll post in full so we have the proper context:

Bumpshack reports that the recall of the image from over 19,000 kiosks nationwide will take 7 to 10 days to complete, and that the film’s distributor is working on an alternate DVD cover image.
